Our residents here are wonderful! They are on strict budgets, hard times and scrapping by to pay their rent in some cases. Although we are not government subsidized, a good handful of them are on food stamps due to the loss of a job. We would like to give back to the community, but more specifically our community. We will be holding a canned food drive in order to be selected for a fully prepared meal from Honey Baked Ham or Omaha Steaks. The food comes delivered to their door and just needs to be heated up! We also have a younger population here that sometimes can't make it home for the holidays due to their exams, budget, etc. We thought it would be an awesome "Thank You" to help support our own and have a cozy meal on us. We serve a full blown Thanksgiving Feast for our residents the Thursday before Thanksgiving so that our residents can spend the actual holiday with their families. We get hams & turkeys from The Honey Baked Ham store. We buy some of their sides and I actually make some of them myself...with homemade cheese balls and pies. The residents love it.

We typed a renewal for every resident in the building. We greeted them as they came home from work in their hallway. We had a table set up with our Kuerig Machine with coffee, hot cocoa and hot cider. We also had snacks and music.

I managed an apartment community for seven years. We sponsered a BLACK FRIDAY (DAY AFTER THANKSGIVING SHOPPING TOUR) for 5 years running. The 1st year we only had a hand full of residents go and we drove our own vehicles. The last year we had a bus of 50. We loaded our residents around 8am and drove them to the Jefferson Outlet Mall (about an hour away). Upon arrival the resident went their seperate ways (or shopped in groups). We met are the food court at 11:30am and purchased lunch for all. After lunch the resident went back to shopping. We all met up around 4pm for the bus ride home. The property where I live is having a contest for the best decorated patio/front door for Thanksgiving. A prize will go to the best decorated. Kind of nice to get everyone to participate. They always do for Christmas but not too many decorate for Thanksgiving.

I would like to tell you about a great tradition that we started last year. We are an upscale apartment community that has made it our goal to have something special each month for our residents. Our staff puts on a monthly social that caters to the whole community, which consists of 143 units. We generally have between 80 to 100+ residents that show up (look forward to) for these events. We've had pizza parties which included food from 3 different restaurants. (We like to support our local community as well.) At a typical pizza social we'll have a local pizzeria provide about 50 pizzas, another restaurant provide the salad, and yet another provide the pasta. A free Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner for all residents if they bring at least one non-perishable canned food item for the needy. Everyone has a good time and the pantry for the less fortunate in our community is helped.

This is the second year we are hosting our Thanksgiving Around the World Party. Since we have such a diverse group of residents living in our building we decided to get everyone involved in this event. We supply the main course (Turkey) and the drinks and ask our residents to bring a dish from their culture to share. We had such a great turn out last year and are looking forward to hosting it again.

The third week of November is National Game & Puzzle Night! Celebrate this week with your residents & prospect by hosting a game& puzzle night. Use all forms of Social Media for one giant game ending on Friday. Involve prospects in a leasing game for example a game called LIFE that starts from the beginning of the tour and ending when they place an application. Looking for a way to connect with your local community? Start a community service cub for your residents. The club can start or participate in many local community outreach events. Thanksgiving is around the corner and many homeless shelters need help serving dinner. This would be a great way for your community to give back by volunteering as a community to server dinner. One of my favorite community outreach projects is collecting toiletry items to put in stockings for Christmas. These stockings are then delivered to a local homeless shelter. There are so many things that we can do to make a difference that it only makes since to have a community service outreach club for your residents.
