Pickleball

Tennis is apparently so passe, as Pickleball is taking the country by storm!  Ok, tennis may not be on its last legs quite yet, but it is true that a quirky sport called "Pickleball" is becoming extremely popular, especially among seniors.  The draw for seniors is that Pickleball is played on a smaller court than tennis, about a third the size, which means less ground to cover, as well as played with a plastic ball, similar to a whiffle ball.  That means the speed is a bit slower, and is a great low-impact sport.  Granted, all ages can play Pickleball, but it does appear to cater towards seniors and would be a great addition to a Senior Housing activity line-up.

Here is a clip explaining how Pickleball works:

We think this is an absolutely great opportunity for senior housing to coordinate residents into an existing Pickleball league, or even create one themselves.  If you have tennis courts on the property that simply are not getting enough use, you could convert one or two nets to Pickleball for a unique amenity!

This page helps find Pickleball locations, although it is not the most user friendly system.

I used to manage a senior community. Another great amended activity, that our residents loved, was beach ball volleyball. We put up a regulation sized volleyball net and put chairs on each side of the net where the player positions usually are and instead of a volleyball we used a beach ball filled partially with air and a little bit of helium. The residents loved it!
