Chili Cook-off!
Chili cooks have one thing in common: They all think their recipe is the best. We can sit around and debate the fundamentals (beans or no beans, hot or not, chicken or beef) forever, but there's really only one way to settle the score: an old-fashioned chili cook-off. By the end of the night, everyone will leave full and happy—and someone will go home with bragging rights. Decide whether you want participants to bring a finished chili dish or prepare the chili from scratch onsite. If they prepare it onsite, then the location needs must be able to handle the appropriate number of cooks. If you have the space, go for this. Watching the chefs prepare their dishes in competition with each other can be as exciting as watching a race. Choose a theme for your cook-off. You can require participants to cook Southwestern style or prepare cowboy chilis....

We have sent out flyers to our residents informing them of a food drive to help our neighbors who are hungry. When a resident comes in to our leasing office to donate Non-perishable food items their name will be entered into a drawing. The winner will win a $25.00 gift card to a local grocery store so they can purchase a turkey or items needed for their Thanksgiving DInner. All through the year and especially during the holidays we like to reach out to help those who are in need. The food will be donated to Hands of Hope/St.James Episcopal CHurch.

This year we had a carnival theme. We had games, which included me (manager) in the dunking booth, prizes for playing, food and a lot of FUN! We served corndogs, nacho's, sour pickles, lemonade, candy apples, candy, etc. At the endo of the night we gave away door prizes for attending. "Alexis Park Gives A Hoot!" - we use the OWL as our current marketing logo.

Resident Thanksgiving
Every year on the Thursday prior to Thanksgiving, we would prepare turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie and residents would bring in their favorite side or dessert. Residents would also be asked to bring in a can of food or non-perishable food item, either for a person or a pet. Donations would go to Northwest Harvest or Senior Food Bank.

We will have Dinner ready for the residents and some desserts. The reseidents can bring their famous or secret family desserts, They leave their Desserts on the table. Then everyone can take/share pieces of desserts, pies and cookies from the table. This is like the cookie swaps but with desserts. And we also collect all the canned goods for Dare to care!

When I started working at The Verge, a student property, I inherited this event. We provided a turkey "Thanksgiving" dinner for our residents. The admission to this event was 2 cans of food. Thus Turkey Can-Can. We donated the food to a local food bank in Chapel Hill. We purchased turkey, gravy and stuffing from K & W Cafeteria and made mashed potatoes and green beans ourselves. This resident event has been held every year at The Verge for at least 6 or 7 years! Residents and staff love it and we give back to the community!
