Get Messy Party
What’s the goal? To get messy! At this event, residents will need to dress for mess! You won’t find any frilly party dresses here! Residents should be prepared to get wet and dirty. Be sure everyone’s wearing old clothes they don’t mind getting dirty. When we were kids it was fun to jump and slop around in the mud in the yard, though nowadays finding a safe space to play with abandon can be difficult. With this event, the aim is to make a fun - and safe - place for kids to dive into mess without parent’s nagging them to keep clean! This event also makes for great pictures too – so be sure to have a few camera’s on hand for capturing candid shots of kids getting wild! Shaving...

Mother’s Day Craft: Plaster of Paris Hand Impressions
With Mother’s Day just around the corner, a kid’s craft event will be the perfect highlight of your month! I think these plaster of Paris hand impressions will make perfectly sweet gifts. They’re also a keepsake the mothers in your community will cherish for years to come. Because this is a super simple craft, kids as young as one or two can easily participate. Just remember that parents will need to accompany small children and help them with the craft. Image source: http://babaknowsbest.blogspot.com/2013/05/weekend-fun-how-to-make-plaster-of-paris.html Crafting hand impressions Plaster of Paris can be purchased at most craft stores, or if you are adventurous, try making it yourself! The plaster of Paris should be mixed in disposable bowls (following the box instructions) in individual portions for every child. Heart-shaped or flower-shaped molds can be made from card...

The Very Hungry Story Time
Yay, its toddler time! Getting kids into the spirit of reading at an early age is incredibly important, so group reading events, where an adult reads a book to a group of children at your community is a great way to give back in a positive way! Image source: Pixabay The Very Hungry Caterpillar We chose The Very Hungry Caterpillar because it is timeless. Not only will the kids at your community love it, but most of the parents will remember it from their childhood, as well. In general, the book of choice for toddlers would be one that is not too wordy, yet at the same time captivating enough to hold a child’s attention and imagination. This particular book targets ages 2 to 4, and we love it because we found some great opportunities...

Build Buzz with a Community Spelling Bee
Educational events are more than just fun community-builders, they also benefit residents in a concrete way by pushing children to excel academically and boost student morale. Hosting a spelling bee in your community is a great way to encourage learning and healthy competition between residents. It’s also a great way to increase opportunities for marketing your community while opening up lines of collaboration with other local organizations and businesses. Preparations 1) Well in advance of the event, reach out to local businesses and bookstores to request donated prizes. This could include coupons for free meals or gift certificates for new or used books. 2) Be sure to advertise the event, and the awards, well in advance so that children have a...

Kite-Flying picnic
Every year in April Kite fliers across America celebrate the history of the world’s favorite pastime by flying kites. It is a month to celebrate what comes from letting your kite fly into the breeze and up into the sky. http://www.nationalkitemonth.org/ A kite-flying picnic is a good way to celebrate the days of spring and can be a creative new way for members of the community to converse. Community members can take some time out of their afternoon and join in kite-making and flying fun. Those attending can make their own kite from scratch or purchase their own and compete for the longest hang time while lying on a picnic blanket and soaking in...
