Summer Party
This summer, when the sidewalks are hot enough to fry an egg on the cement, it’s good messy fun to actually give it a try!
In your community, host a sidewalk egg fry to test the talents and culinary skills of residents. Participants can craft up contraptions to harness the heat of the sun and sidewalk to cook an egg!
How to Host an Egg Fry
Ensure that residents have enough advance notice to figure out how they will try to fry an egg.
You also need to keep an eye on the weather and plan your egg fry event on one of the hottest days of the year.

To ensure you keep residents safe out on the cement, keep a time limit to how long the eggs can cook - usually around 30 minutes. Set up tents for shade or plan to host your event near some big trees for all the onlookers and cheerleaders to stand in while they watch the festivities.
Keep residents hydrated with coolers filled with waters and juice. You can also set up giant water dispensers and cool water for them to share. In the days before the event starts, also remind residents to wear their sunglasses, hats, and long sleeves to protect from sunburn.
Materials
You’ll definitely want to be in charge of the eggs for fairness! This way you can make sure they are uniformly the same size and consistency for all participants. You also don’t want anyone’s egg to be broken in transport to the event.
Consider keeping some empty pie tins and aluminum foil on hand for those that want to jump in and join the fun on the actual day of the event competition.
Running the Competition
At high noon start the clock and have everyone crack open their eggs. Then, 30 minutes later, stop the clock and award prizes to the most edible, and best-looking, fried eggs.
Encourage residents to get creative about their solar cooking. They can use things like arranged aluminum foil, homemade solar ovens, frying pans, mirrors, and even magnifying glasses to cook their egg as part of the frying competition.
Because most sidewalks, even in the hottest of conditions, only get up to about 145 degrees, contestants will need to use these other apparatus to get their eggs up to the required 158 or so degrees needed to fry.
