Essence of Belly Dance

Belly dance is a traditional sensual dance with moves that range from basic advanced. Much like yoga or pilates, residents who learn belly dance moves will strengthen their body’s core muscles and improve flexibility. Practicing belly dance will also help residents move with elegance and confidence. 

 

Belly dance is great for both toning the muscles and cardiovascular health. It combines slow sensual upper body movements with deliberate footwork and steps. It’s quite the full-body workout! 

 

Teaching residents basic belly dance moves will boost their self-confidence and help them love their bodies with all its bumps and curves.

 

Finding an Instructor

 

The best way to get active event participants is to hire an instructor to come in and teach a one-off beginner class (or regular classes once a month). A local community dancer and belly dance instructor can both demonstrate the moves and inspire your residents. 

 

You can find instructors locally by browsing local dance association websites or through your local university. You can also find belly dance instructors through websites like the International Dance Teacher’s Association (IDTA).

 

However, if hiring an instructor is not available in your area, experiment on your own by having residents work together to practice and perfect their moves with the help of an online or video course. Find a beginner's belly dance DVD to play for residents. Organize residents so everyone can see the screen and move freely about the room.

 

Teach the Basics

 

Some essential moves to learn are hip lifts, shimmy, snake arms, and the traveling vine.

Encourage Costumes

 

Ask your residents to dress for the event in comfortable, flowing, and sensual clothes. Loose outfits like yoga attire work best to ensure residents have a full range of movement.

To make the event even more fun, collect some anklets, jewelry, coin headbands, long flowing scarves, and other accessories. Make them available to residents who may forget to dress up for the class!

***BONUS*** Set up a table and chairs or some comfortable throw pillows in a corner and invite a local henna artist to give henna “tattoos” to residents as part of the event!
