Fairy Garden Craft

This creative, fantasy event involves creating a miniature fairy garden out of plants, scraps, and old pots. Making a fairy garden is a fun project for any age, and both residents and children will have a ton of fun putting this craft together!

The sky is the limit when it comes to making a small fairy garden. There are houses, fountains, mini furniture, and mini communities. The only thing stopping residents from creating the fairy gardens of their dreams are the limits of their own imaginations!

Fairy Garden-Building Materials

Here is a short list of materials your residents can use to build their fairy garden. You can both add to the stash yourself and also encourage residents to bring old items from their houses along as well!

Some of these items you may have around already. You can encourage residents to find some of these materials themselves; some items may take searching. Regardless, encourage residents to keep crafting the perfect materials and adding elements of their own fairy garden.

Making the Containers

  • Flower pots. Broken or chipped is fine! Don’t throw away broken pots! Take all the broken pieces of an old pot and use them to make tiny stairs leading up to a roof-top fairy garden.
  • Old containers. Drill holes at the bottom for drainage if needed. You can use any container to make your fairy garden. Rusty and broken pots and pans, an old drawer, even an old colander!
  • Potting soil - enough to fill residents’ containers!
  • Moss, flowers, and succulents can all help add to the woodsy feel. Here is a list of small plants that work great with fairy gardens.
  • Popsicle sticks/craft sticks (both large and small).
  • Toothpicks.
  • Small rocks and pebbles for path-making.
  • Fallen sticks, twigs, and tree bark (gathered from around your property) make great bridges, fences, and ladders!

Decorating Your Fairy Gardens

Here are some ideas of decorations you can make to put in your fairy garden. This is not an exhaustive list! The more creative and personal you can make your garden the better.

  • Birdhouses as fairy houses. You can find unfinished, inexpensive wooden birdhouses at your local craft store. When you add paint and decorations, they make great fairy garden houses!
  • Dink umbrellas and other miniatures.
  • Figurines of fairies, gnomes, trolls, animals, and other forest creatures.
  • Milk cartons (both big and small) also make great fairy houses once decorated.
  • Play dough or air-dry clay. Shape clay into miniature stools, chairs, and tiny dishes. Start by making a few small items and then add more as needed.
  • Floss, strong, yarn, and thread.
  • Old mismatched buttons. Ask residents in your community for unused sewing items!
  • Scraps of fabric and ribbon.

Once you’ve collected all your materials and set up tables outside, encourage residents to just have fun with it! Remember, fairy garden magic is in the details!

Give enough time (2-3 hours) for residents to complete their whole projects. And don’t forget to take lots of pictures of residents with their gardens for social media sharing!

***BONUS*** Offer to display the fairy gardens in the actual gardens in front of your office after they’re completed!
