How to Host a Spring Cleaning Swap Shop

If you’re looking for a spring cleaning activity for residents, there are a few great ways to encourage it in your community!

We’ve previously mentioned holding a community yard sale to turn resident clutter into cash, but there are other ways to get residents purging as well.

Consider encouraging a swap shop where residents can either give away unused items and/or swap them for those they need. It’s a great way to upcycle and repurpose unwanted items that other residents may be able to use for their families.

What is a swap shop?

A swap shop is a cashless event where people exchange unwanted items for something they do want and need. Things like preloved sports equipment, toys, kids clothes, and other good condition home items are great ideas of things to bring to such an event.

The unusual, fun, and funky are all encouraged:

**NOTE** Not everyone needs to bring something. Actually, the more takers the better! It will mean you’ll have very little left over at the end ot figure out what to do with.

Setting up shop

Depending on what time of year you plan to hold your event, it may work in- or outdoors.

For an outdoor event, you can either set up tables and chairs in a common grassy area or particular parking lot in your community. You can also ask residents to set up their “shop” right outside each of their apartment, house, or buildings.

You may choose to have an event inside a specific venue or simply have a day when everyone puts their unwanted items out on the street and anyone can take what they want.

**TIP** Remember to arrange for anything not claimed to be taken to a local thrift or furniture reuse organisation afterwards.

Resident Event’s user Ryan Green also shared these tips of more ways to make your swap and shop event a bit competitive and a super success!
