Our Resident’s Pot Luck Thanksgiving Cookbook 2013
Every year it’s the same Thanksgiving resident event. We have a lunch, dinner, or pot luck for the residents, but why not change it up a little this year? Have a pot luck, but resident must bring the recipe with their dish. It can be a turkey, side dish, dessert, or appetizer, and encourage them to share online what they are bringing, so you don’t get 15 different stuffing recipes. Have a panel of anonymous judges, judge the dishes, and announce the winners. As you may know, people love sharing pictures of food, so be ready to share pictures of the winning dishes and their cooks in social media and in your newsletter! What is beautiful about this event is that it doesn’t end with the event itself! One of the main purposes of the event is to create a cookbook of all entries...

Super Mario Themed Apartment Party!
We found this event, which was actually a 5 year old birthday party, and fortunately, they allowed us to share it here on Resident Events! We wish we had more details on the construction of the party pieces, but hopefully you can figure out how to create them on your own. Some of these ideas are incredibly creative, such as the Goomba stomp, ? Boxes, and Yoshi eggs! Edit: Looking back at this event, one of the things we love most is the immersion into the idea. For example, you could get a superhero-themed bounce house and call it a "superhero party", but does that really excite people? Events like this, that take an idea to the next level, are really want create memorable moments. The kids who attend this party will remember this for a long, long time, which...

Halloween Decorating Idea: Glowing Eyes!
This is an incredibly easy way to add a little spookiness at your community!  Here is how you do it: Take old toilet paper rolls and cut eyes in them. Take a glow stick (often found in dollar stores), and wrap it in wax paper, and put it in the toilet paper roll.  (The wax paper diffuses the light for a better effect) Duct tape the ends so that light doesn’t leak out and ruin the effect. That’s it!  Strategically place them in the bushes for creepy lit-up eyes during Halloween!

Pet Event – The Cardboard Cut-Out Social Media Contest
We actually found this event on the Best Western Denver Southwest’s Fan Page, where the hotel has a dinosaur theme. In a fit of brilliance, the hotel ran a Pet Cardboard Box Dinosaurification Challenge, where basically entrants would draw a dinosaur on a cardboard box, and stick their pet’s head through it for some fun. Yes, it’s goofy, but it did a great job at interacting with their fans! Plus, the pictures ended up getting shared not only on Facebook, but throughout all sorts of sites, each time creating opportunities for free publicity. But even on just Facebook, these were the basic stats for the kitten T-Rex picture: Would you like that type of reaction to your contests? This same concept, or one similar, would be a great fit for a “pet friendly” apartment community! ...

How to Start a Running Club in Your Community
September is the perfect month to kick off a running club in your community – the temperature is cooler, your residents are back from vacations, and the best reason of all, it’s peak race season for runners. Whether they’re interested in training for a race, spending time with friends, or just looking for a great workout, your residents will appreciate your efforts of establishing a running club. In return, you’ll build positive relationships with your renters that will encourage resident retention. Here are a few tips to get you started: One of the first steps is to gauge interest in your community. You can do this by observing residents running outside in your community or in the fitness center, distributing a survey asking renters if they are interested in participating, or simply striking up a conversation about it with...

End of Summer Closet Clean Out And Fill Up Extravaganza!
Fall is quickly approaching and you know what that means; out with the tanks and shorts and in with coats and scarves. As everybody has busy lives, finding time to drop off cloths to the local donation center can be a challenge! So invite each resident to bring as many new or gently used items to the community office to be donated to Goodwill. Have food, snacks, drinks, gift card give-aways and a grand prize raffle. But beyond simply donating clothes, we though a good incentive would be to help residents “Fill Up” their closet, too! So rather than generic VISA gift cards, reach out to local stores that sell clothing to see if they would like to participate in the event by donating a gift card! This is a fantastic way for them to support a good cause, and at the...

Give Me A Break! A Parent Survival Gift
If you ask parents what they need more of, many of them will immediately say “time”! Rushing back and forth between work, school activities, and responsibilities at home, many parents are simply run ragged. So if you want to be invaluable to the stressed out parents of your community, consider giving them a break once a week, and make the community clubhouse a kid-friendly zone after school! Most of the time the kids get off the bus and come through the front office to get home. Why not keep them for a bit after school and provide them with snacks and some type of activity? The time will help the kids make friends and give the parents some much needed time. Even one hour is like gold when you are trying to keep up with the world. Take a look at...

Icebreaker - The Name Game
One of the major goals of most every apartment party should be to facilitate residents getting to know each other. A free hotdog is nice and all, but free food pales in comparison to forming connections with fellow neighbors when it comes to resident retention. So we want to brainstorm different ways to inspire people to actually interact with others outside of those they came to the party with. There are several “name game” types of activities, and this is just one strategy. The plan is to reward people for getting to know others at the party, and to do so, the game involves testing residents on which names they learned. How to Play: Each attendee gets a nametag with their name on one side and a number on the opposite side. Residents are asked to show their name...

Community Clubhouse Parties Hosted By Residents
A while back we asked what people’s best apartment party idea was, and one person responded, “Allow your clubhouse for wedding showers, baby showers, etc for free”. Granted, this isn’t an event that is meant to be provided for residents, so we weren’t sure if it should be shared on Resident Events, but there were some unique benefits to doing so, so we thought we would throw it out there to chew on. Here are some benefits we brainstormed by implementing this: 1) Value add for the residents. Having a location open to them, even if they don’t use it, would definitely something valuable to your residents. 2) Great marketing opportunity. These events will be predominantly for non-residents, so it’s a great apartment marketing opportunity to showcase your community and clubhouse....
