Let Your Spirit Soar – Come Fly a Kite!

Summer is at its peak – and everybody is looking to spend some enjoyable time outdoors in the long, breezy evenings.

We have a perfect event planned for this week. Community residents can lighten up for an evening full of kite fun!

For the event - you could buy kites, have resident’s bring their own, or arrange a pre-event activity for making DIY kites.

We definitely suggest letting the residents create their own kites – as it would be exciting for the people to see their self-made kites soaring high.

DIY kites

For a DIY kite making session, you will need some large sturdy plastic bags (or plastic sheeting), dowels, scissors, tape, and a yardstick. Most of these things are easily available in every home.  Here is a detailed, step-by-step guide for making your own kite. In addition, you could also have pre-printed templates for residents to follow.

Here is a video which shows how to make your own kite in less than 10 minutes.

***BONUS*** For more advanced and creative residents, templates and instructions for all different kite shapes and sizes, (e.g. this roller kite) can be printed out ahead of time.

Mind the wind!

When planning a kite flying event there needs to be a breeze. A mild to moderate level of wind (5 – 15 mph) will be sufficient for flying a standard shaped kite.

Check the level of wind in your region prior to planning this event. Choose the best day to plan flying a kite. If you’re unsure when to plan this event, check with kite enthusiasts in your area to find out the best kite-flying seasons!

Kite Race

Yes! A kite race will be actually as exhilarating as it sounds!

We suggest kite racing instead of, or in addition to, the common kite flying experience.

Kite racing could be done with residents having a normal race with kites in hand. If you would like to make it even more unique and entertaining – the race could be done as a bicycle race with kites soaring high. Kite racing may even be planned with roller skates, in-line skates, skateboards, or scooters.
