Community Nature Hike
We all need a breath of fresh air sometimes! One creative way to provide that for your residents is to organize a nature walk on a nearby park or preserve! There’s more fun in numbers! Hiking nearby allows you to take advantage of the natural beauty close to your community, without having to go too far. Many urban areas are within 30-45 minutes of a large park or nature preserve. Ask around or search online to find what green open spaces and facilities are available to you! Once you’ve narrowed down the list, arrange a day and time to go out “into the wild” with your residents. As you arrange your outing, here are a few things to keep in mind… Guide or No...

Community Speed Friending!
Can’t we all just get along? Speed friending is sweeping the nation. We’ve all heard of speed dating and its benefits: speed-friending is no different. People want to make new friends, but it’s hard to figure out how to go about it. With speed friending, residents can pursue the goal without appearing desperate. Speed friending is just what it sounds like, except the goal is to find friends instead of dates! You can host the event on-site, in a local coffee shop, or at a lounge area near your community. Speed friending is like an icebreaker with a bit of a twist: it combines rotations (well-known in speed-dating) with conversation starters. Instead of making the whole group mingle together, you can let people get to know each other one-on-one. This...

Materials and Components Power sources The recommended power source for this project is batteries. Batteries provide direct current (DC) power: this means that their power current flows in one direction. We recommend 2 AA 3V battery packs. Loads In a circuit, the load in a circuit is anything that consumes the power. Aim for components rated for around 3V and for DC power. Here are a few ideas: LEDs ...

Pooch Plunge - Dog Day at the Pool
If you're like most communities, you don't allow resident pets in the hot tub or pool. This is for obvious safety and sanitation reasons. However, to make your canine friends feel welcome, plan a puppy play date at the pool on the last day before the pool area closes for the year! During the dog days of summer, a doggie swim day is a perfect event to hold in your swimming pool right before you close it down and drain the pool for cleaning. Dog day at the pool is the one time of year when your community’s dogs are welcome to dog paddle, fetch, and play in the pool! Building a Pup Friendly Pool Party Towels Buy some big fluffy beach towels and spread them around on the ground in a few shaded areas near the pool. Dogs will...
